Wrinkles – what are they?

You may not normally think about it this way, but most of the wrinkles you develop on your face are caused by muscle movement below the skin. The muscle moves the skin and the skin creases in certain spots. Skin is very resilient, but over time the areas of creasing or wrinkling become more pronounced.

What can be done about it?

If you never smile or use facial expression those wrinkles will not develop. For most people that is not an option however. But using very small amounts of anti-wrinkle injections (a wrinkle injections medicine) can help relax specific muscle areas. The overlying skin will no longer crease significantly and the wrinkles will dramatically improve. What’s more it gives that area of the face a chance to recover. Your skin is a living organ- your largest organ in fact. So while the medicine is working your skin may have a chance to regenerate to some extent. Many patients will note that over time the skin texture will improve and look ‘more healthy’.

Which areas can be treated?

The wrinkle injections can be used in dozens of areas were lines have been caused by muscle movement. The most popular areas treated are the forehead lines, the glabellar lines (between the eyebrows) and the crows feet near the eyes.

Will it change the way I look?

The treatment will likely improve the appearance of lines. At Star Cosmetic Medicine we usually recommend that most facial expressions are left intact to give a ‘natural’ appearance. So the usual result is a fresher and more rejuvenated appearance.

Are wrinkle injections safe?

Wrinkle injections medicine has been used for over 30 years. It is used in many areas of medicine including children with cerebral palsy. In these cases often large doses are need to relax muscles that have gone into spasm. By doing so it can restore more mobility to the child. In both cosmetic and medical uses the wrinkle injections medicine’s safely profile is very high, particularly when used in a proper medical setting.

How long do wrinkle injections last?

This is dependant on several factors but usually 3-4 months. The more treatments you have the longer the results seem to last.

What does the treatment involve?

The wrinkle injections involve several injections in specific areas. A firm understanding of anatomy and physiology is needed by the practitioner to give the best results. The needle is even smaller than a diabetic needle and most patients describe minimal discomfort.

How much does it cost?

At Star Cosmetic Medicine, the cost is $12.50 per unit. The amount of units depends on the person, the results intended and the area treated. For the forehead that is usually $150-$200.
